Kay Glidden, MS, is a compassion fatigue specialist, trauma informed care trainer and mindfulness educator. Her experience stems from 30+ years as a mental health professional and work in a public behavioral health system. Kay is a co-owner of Compassion Resiliency, a training and consultation company that promotes the well-being of professionals who work in high stress/trauma-exposed environments.

 

 

Frye, Jana, MSW, LCSW

Jana Frye, MSW, LCSW, joined the faculty as the Field Director and as an assistant professor in August 2014. She holds a Bachelor’s degree in Criminal Justice from Truman State University (‘90) and a MSW from the University of Kansas (‘99). She is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker for Missouri (LCSW). She has sixteen years of post-Masters field experience focusing primarily in the areas of child welfare and mental health services to youth, adults and families in the Northwest Missouri Region. In addition, she served as adjunct faculty at MWSU for Department of Health, Physical Education and Recreation. Jana Frye has provided state and local training on numerous issues associated with youth and adult services, as well as practitioner ‘survival’. She serves as a NASW licensure instructor for the Missouri LBSW/LCSW exam. Her areas of expertise are in the following areas, macro practice, clinical practice with individuals and families, child welfare, child protection and adoption, work with trauma victims, veterans effected by PTSD and their partners and work with sexual offenders.

Cooley-Bennett, Terri, BSW, MSW, LCSW, LSCSW, CCDP-D, TTS

Ms. Terri Cooley-Bennett is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker (MO), a Licensed Specialist Clinical Social Worker (KS), a Co-occurring Disorders professional diplomate, and a Tobacco Treatment Specialist. She is in the Doctor of Social Work (DSW) program at Tulane University School of Social Work (TSSW) and a participant in the Teaching Fellowship program. Ms. Cooley-Bennett has worked with vulnerable populations and with individuals experiencing homelessness, mental illness, substance use, sexual exploitation, trauma, poverty, and other vulnerabilities. She works for Swope Health in the Behavioral Health Department and has a variety of duties such as providing psychiatric evaluations for clients, and is a member of the Cultural Employee Resource Group (ERG) and the Licensure and Supervision Committee.
Ms. Cooley-Bennett has over 20 years of experience as a presenter, workshop leader, and educator and is on the ethics committee of the Missouri Chapter of the National Association of Social Workers (NASW) and trained with the National NASW Office of Ethics and Professional Review. She provides ethics training for organizations such as the Missouri Coalition for Behavioral Healthcare, the Missouri National Association of Social Workers, the University of Kansas School of Social Welfare Continuing Education Program, and the Missouri Credentialing Board. She presented for the Doctorate in Social Work (DSW) National Conference and the National HealthCare for the Homeless Conference. She provides field instruction for social work students and clinical supervision for professionals seeking licensure. She has also held adjunct professor positions for the City Vision University Addictions Counseling Program and the University of Kansas School of Social Welfare.

Clary, Pam, PhD, MSW

Dr. Pam Clary is an Associate Professor and Director of the Bachelor of Social Work Program at Missouri Western State University. She came to MWSU in 2007. Dr. Clary received her BSW (’87) from Kansas State University, MSW (’91) from the University of Kansas and her PhD (’14) from Kansas State University. She has over 20 years of direct clinical experience and almost 20 years of teaching experience (BSW and MSW classes), along with several years of administrative experience. Dr. Clary’s social work experience includes working with children, youth and families with mental health issues, Parent/Child Sex Educator, licensed clinical social worker working with victims of sexual abuse and domestic violence and home health. In addition, Dr. Clary has been and continues to be actively involved in the community. She sits on community boards, task forces, sub-committees and is involved in ongoing professional activities that promote diversity and social justice. She is licensed in both Missouri and Kansas.

Carpenter, John, MSW, LCSW

After obtaining a BA in Psychology from DePauw University in Indiana and a MSW from Washington University in St. Louis, John has served southwest Missouri for 45 years as a Psychiatric Therapist working with individuals, couples, families, and groups for all types of disorders and behavior problems.
He learned that using experiential approaches, metaphors, and visual props often revealed many hidden dynamics and reactions that just talking would never have produced. This made therapy more clearly understood, experienced, and productive.

Boddie, Courtney, PhD

Dr. Courtney Boddie is a licensed and board-certified mental health provider, healthcare administrator, counselor educator and supervisor, and consultant with an orientation toward social justice. He completed his clinical education at the University of Missouri’s CACREP-accredited program, is a fellow of the National Board for Certified Counselors, and holds a specialty certification in trauma counseling through the American Mental Health Counselors Association. With experience in group practice, agency, and college counseling settings, he specializes in clinical traumatology, multicultural and social justice counseling, psychological assessment, and career development. He currently serves as Clinical Director and NBCC Approved Continuing Education Provider Program Administrator at The Counseling Hub and teaches at the University of Missouri-St. Louis and Southern New Hampshire University.

Shoemaker, Drew, MD

I was born in Iowa, and then moved to Missouri in 1982, and have been here since.  I graduated from Missouri State University, and went to Medical School at the University of Missouri in Columbia and did my residency in Family Medicine at Cox Medical Centers in Springfield.  I previously practiced Bolivar and Boonville, Missouri before joining Burrell to practice Family and  Addiction Medicine in March of 2020 where I am the medical director of the Fordland Clinic (a Burrell affiliate) and the Behavioral Crisis Center at Burrell. 

I am married with six children, and three grandchildren.  My wife and I enjoy any outside activity, and travel. 

I have a Bachelor’s degree from Southwest Baptist University, a Master’s degree from Missouri State University and my Medical Doctorate from the University of Missouri in Columbia.  I am board certified in Family Medicine, and will sit for addiction boards this fall.

Menzies, Percy, M. Pharm.

Percy Menzies is the president of Assisted Recovery Centers of America, LLC, a center for the treatment of alcoholism and drug addiction based in St. Louis, Missouri which was established in 2001.

Percy’s interest and passion for pharmacological treatment of drug addiction and alcoholism goes back to the early eighties when naltrexone was first introduced for the treatment of heroin addiction. He worked for over 18 years for DuPont Pharmaceuticals in various positions and had responsibility for naltrexone as the associate product director.

He has worked closely with drugs courts and provided training on the use of anticraving medications to reduce recidivism within the criminal justice population addicted to alcohol and opioids. He has conducted workshops for a wide range of audiences both in the US and overseas on evidenced-based treatments for addictive disorders.

He has been invited to serve on expert committees to develop guidelines for the treatment of addictive disorders and alcoholism.

He has been invited to serve on advisory boards both in the private and government sectors.

Percy holds a master’s degree in pharmacy from India. Percy immigrated to the United States in 1977.

Arteaga, Dayana, DO

My name is Dayana Arteaga and I am a fourth year psychiatry resident. I will be graduating as a psychiatrist from UMKC in June of this year, and I am immensely excited about this. I completed my psychiatry training in both the University of Oklahoma and University of Missouri-Kansas City. Following graduation I will start a job with the Cox inpatient psychiatric hospital in Springfield, Missouri.

My dream growing up was to become a physician, and every day I wake up smiling because with hard work and dedication I made this dream a reality. I graduated from the University of Oklahoma with a degree in Microbiology and Magna Cum Laude Honors in 2012, and shortly after began my medical studies at the Oklahoma State University College of Osteopathic Medicine. I graduated with the degree of Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine in 2016. I enjoy Psychiatry very much, and feel honored to care for psychiatric patients every day. I also enjoy the arts, classical music, and books that speak to my soul. I believe that hope can make all the difference!
